What is the next ?

What is the next ?

I know we all are very busy now, and we think what is the next step. I have several opportunities and a few ideas.

My best “want” is to get back into teaching, get classes running, questions asked, discover new amazing people and characters…

My other best “want” is to put together exhibition after the Plain air in Petersburg.

And my next to best are finish book on medieval culture and start one about 15 year old philosopher , lady who wrote to Russo and Valter, rearrange garden, get my son to come over here and take my man over there, to Molde in Norway.

Of cause there is possibility of not surviving till September educational year, as some winds and things can smash you off your feet and with the wind you can fly away alike Merry Poppins, my dear peer.(or may be I am addressing myself?)

If it all goes as planned, I get to Petersburg for plain air, doctors, relatives -my sisters come to the city same time to meet. Then, I get

Today sun is shining, I do not spend 3 hours to commute and we got landlines back, might be water and probably sewer and hot water with stove return to make life civilized.

MOODLE

I take a moment to research  my innovative development points. I have obligation to do so whether I will get to the end or not. just a few hours ago I was going to withdraw and go into my life of the hermit. But students brought on me their problems and worries..somebody getting engaged, somebody is homeless, somebody has an idea and it was all trusted to me. So I felt I am in the right place here and not going to leave it unless would be shown the door. So back to work ! I need to do a lot ,because Mrs B and K spent time working to help me, and because deep down I think I am a good teacher and I might get it right and get a place one day. it is also worth doing, when I think about my students. The one I have now, whose respect and heart I won at the end of the year after hard labor and a lot of politics.

I am doing research on Moodle in teaching art .It came naturally, as I realised Moodle is not in use. All year long, it could be working for me as a teacher, establishing communication with each and every student.it could be  path to make teaching more inclusive. There are 4 students that withdrawn from one of the groups and we got to learn that only after a chain of actions, when it could be done straight away. (I have to say, that 2 left for work. ) using Moodle can keep me in touch with students and what is happening , so I can be flexiable and plan each lesson knowing about all those things, that can influence process of learning. It allow me to answer questions about homework and classwork, explain  some issues, ask my students opinion directly or having a quiz.

a lot of questions could find answers.

Somebody was away ? and machine goes …”Send your work pictures, drop me a line about your research, do you need support”

There is an exhibition ? “price, about, where, when”

I see a lot of other opportunities to work with Moodle platform. It has blog, storage, email and some other tools. You can argue, that there are other platforms and other programmes, that can be used .I must agree, but why to chose something else, when we have it there in the flesh of the College WW2.0 space?

Visual Studies can benefit from teacher-student connection and I think , that I have introduce you to the part of my rational. It also make it possible to make this one step out from the “plan and done” construction. I am able to address issues of the hidden curriculum through the instruments of the platform. I might ask my learners to submit their work evaluation through the email,so we save a bit on paper.  Those of my students, who have dyslexia (4 in 16 group B and 2 in group Mc) can use programmes to correct their writing and save me from long decoding of their essay with the help of magnifying glass and experienced colleague.

I can see possibility to address all the group and involve them in creating their group profile, where they can exchange their ideas and thoughts on the subject of lesson,

It is possible to have non direct clues ,that might help my learners to develop their non verbal language and work through the sound, image.  think, it is very important to introduce students to local artist and may be to artist we are studding at the lesson.I probably struggle to ask famous American artist Philipp Taaffe or mexican photographer Irina Rodriges to come over to Grimsby, but I can connect him /her with my students at the lesson with the help of audio and video tool,. Can you imagine, how much fuss a teacher would have if s/he decided to ask a professional to come over to a “quickchat”. It cannot be too long, can it?

It is something that can emulate real demand for artist in modern world. Everyone will agree, that art and acting are especially individualistic and egocentric professions.I probably have to call it way of life rather than profession. Artist working for himself is in underground, but even in solitude, his mind looking for communication with the world. Internet provides that extremely eaasy opportunity to be noticed, to promote yourself and what you are doing. it is well known practice nowadays to use site, page, blog, chat etc…when you come with your portfolio to gallery, you often asked address… of your site, page, blog, digital gallery. A teacher can set examples and allow learner to taste how artist promote his works, exchange ideas and collaborate.

Professionalism

http://johnjay.jjay.cuny.edu/profiles/pdfs/Nelson_Bonnie.pdf

Nelson, Bonnie R.
PUB. DATE    October 1980
SOURCE   Library Journal;10/1/1980, Vol. 105 Issue 17, p2029
SOURCE TYPE   Trade Publication

I have started with a link to the article by Nelson B. I hope that you can  find time to look through the article, after getting results of the assignment. It is interesting observation and has some questions I am asking myself on subject of  a profession and a professionalism. I really loved how author observed different aspects of professionalism and profession.

When I was writing I thought about complexity of the position of a teacher. Alike many occupation, that ranked as profession it means long training, never-ending training and mastering work with and for people.

R Nelson started with question : ” What does it matter…., whether we are “professionals” or not?Isn’t what’s important the work we do?” as she noticed her profession was ” amused”. Then she defines “profession” using Oxford Dictionary and developing discussion on the meaning of the words.  Semantic of the word stepped over boarders and for many we share same significance. We borrow words and with speed of interconnection we share now at once the idea, as soon as word appears in our language.sometimes even earlier, that it is accepted by dictionary.

Author stressed the difficult character of the subject by connecting professionalism to chimera. And we  look at Professionalism through historic changes and views done in different time.Author ,who is not a teacher, but a librarian, shows what professions, in spite being different as occupations have in common.Nelson argues “professions are considered to be different from, and socially superior to, occupations dealing in trade and handicraft.” She looks at the trade union and professional unions tasks.

I agree with author, that it is  social service. We see constantly demands of society and when looking at all “stakeholders of curriculum”, we could not neglect the fact that 60 % of them have social characteristic. Government- is machine to rule the country, which expresses interest of the main class or majority people in classless society, as K Marks described. Councils, controlling  and managing bodies again show the same characteristic.

Another interesting point of view, that again shows changes in understanding professionalism and meaning of the profession is payment. nelson looks at payment, income as reflection of valuing services by professionals. Status as recognition of the position of the professional. I think, it is very difficult to consider it as criteria of recognition of importance of profession. Hence, author has pointed an important aspect of status.

I found an important issue  in the article. Women and professionalism! Woman in profession. I  am sure, that this demographic change shows how professions developed according and responding to historical changes. Nelson then argues on ideas of women being more suited to be librarian (Author writes about profession from the point of librarian) as they could be paid less and prepared to “make libraries more home-like”. Now, when we observing closure of the libraries, we have to agree, that it would be women who are going to be redundant.

The end of the article can be seen a little beet controversial.  Nelson concluded that it is not achievable goal to understand and describe what is the profession. She suggests ,that we better look and study what  is necessary to improve our service and that ” we must recognize that the fault may not lie all within ourselves, but may be inherent in the nature of our society” . Nelson wrote about America, but I found in this passionate article we can see so much to think about.

JAnuary observation of Contextual art

Tutor Observation

Art Neuvour and Art deco Comparison.Styles’ Difference

Objectives to Analysae Art Nouveau and Art Deco Differences

To summarise original “style” of movement: Arts and Crafts

Identify difference between movements Arts and Crafts and Bauhaus

Every group of learners and each class you deliver put questions what style to choose, what philosophy to base your delivery and set of questions on psychology and styles. It is also have to be related to the subject and as result has another important part –your subject!

It is specific of profession, rather than Occupation, that consist not only from your knowledge of specialisation but your speciality as a teacher.

I was working with a very interesting group, that only now, when I add and review my reflection formed a team of learners, not so much opposing to the new teacher or one group to another.

Mc Queen

Is a Foundation Degree fist year group, where students divided into several groups. Character of the most student could be described as very individualistic and self-centred. I am expecting to face a new challenge at each lesson. It was very often misleading when talking to each student on his/hers progression to see that there is no express of misunderstanding, no questions asked and then to hear them complaining. Though there were discussions on use of a plain English, concentrating on delivering only suggested information, I was not feeling, that my learners can be satisfied . Help came with establishing a blog, where I put information reflecting what has been discussed at the session.

Language is surprising a very powerful and important instrument in teaching. We have to create basic environment for developing language, sometimes going in a school alike direction. First year is very much that transition between school learning style to college. My mentor suggested to look at each word, repeating and coming back to what has been already learnt so student of this group memorise the term , name etc.

I have prepared a game to refresh their memory on subject of the lesson, that I thought would be easy to work with . And set up temp of delivery. I was hoping that group will be comfortable to work in a small groups, but at that stage it was not achieved.

Another problematic area was environment of the class. It is an auditorium full of light and at 1pm it is hardly possible to project any images. As it was not class for Contextual art studies, there are another issues. I have to do a lot of cleaning before my lesson; there are pins and needles everywhere. I tried to change the class, but it was not possible to arrange as my mail was lost. Communication! It was and still one of the biggest issues on department.

Lesson was not very successful, it was not successful at all from the point of view of the observer as I worked out, and questions, activity and theme were not delivered in appropriate style. My mentor also addressed me hurrying to get result and giving my students answers when they hesitated.

I got couple of 2s and majority of 3s and on 4.

Class MANAGEMENT

My class management was probably the worst part of the delivery.

Setting small projector gave smaller picture and as it was noticed did not succeed to provide better view.I expected the colour and drawing would be better seen. I am using now Apple Computer in the class so the projection is bigger and quality of colour projection is slightly better in quality.

Next time I plan lesson in Computer class or another room, I should apply for using that facilities in written in advance, to make sure that I have all basic resources for my lesson delivery.

Whiteboard. Not much could be done as it is difficult to access it and if I write I can use ¼ of the space without ladder or without moving furniture. It does not mean I have excuse for not using this resource, but probably involve students in work and ask them to write on board and take part in presentation. It could be useful as next Project involve their presentation.

Getting all learners together. It is not only “physical” task, it is more behaviour management question. This group is divided into 4 groups plus 2 pairs of individuals who keep away from the general antagonism. I need longer observation of characters to find out way to improve atmosphere and set up team work.

It could be a good opportunity to create a bit of team work atmosphere when starting Independent research Project. I do not think that random teaming bring the expected result, but getting students together according their interests might smooth the edges.

Never have observation the first lesson after the break.

It was unforgiving to give wrong description of the class, make sure that it would be a certain room. Provide some support ( a glass of water) when knowing that tutor/mentor had hard day.( Safeguarding)

Make sure that Observer makes marks while listening to your class and has noticed why and what you are doing .

Delivery

Slow down pace! It is at the moment the biggest problem. I had remark to slow down the pace and I have been explained now that not covering all material might give some opportunity for students to do own research develop their writing and reading skills. I have to agree and would certainly note here, that if I get another observation at this subject, will make sure, that students involved in learning and lesson is more student oriented. ( get to look through Petty etc)

Can I cancel observation if do not feel well. Can I cancel lesson if feel unwell? That day just could not, as I knew there were nobody to cover my absence.

I created blog , that makes students refresh material they learnt at class. I need to solve time consuming writing notes, getting balance between important –key information and giving students space to add their own reflection on material. (print key information)

I certainly need to think about strategy working with this group, more activities and make it more repetition of material as half of the class seems to be passive learners.

Choosing Philosphy at a small Project.

I shall call it a small project as it is 60 min lesson, that was designed for 2,5 hour session. It seems to me I need have to apply to my preparation Maslow ideas for the start. So I can consider everything that can influence my lesson. What are needs of my students?Ineed to evaluate all domain that influence students motivation. Evaluate and then build up the matrix of the lesson when evaluating all domains. What Kolb was saying about changing from active experience to Concrete experience has to be transformed to a certain situation. With passive students, like mine, it would be important to use something exciting, get them inspired and then move their interest to the subject you want .To address that part of their intelligence ,that is more active, more likely to respond to the subject.

I think there is room for using humanism philosophy and implementing R Steiner methods in teaching art. He suggested to work in a projects, developing your own book. Drawing your own path for development. It is very close to what we are doing, to the style of Grimsby College School of Arts . It suggests that you need to change style of activity in order to create firm and wide understanding of the subject. Being Humanist philosophy it shares some views of other theories and teaching. We have to consider age, age psychology and specific of teaching, alike Ushinsky, Antroposophy addesses also cultural background of the learner as part of his/hers development. It also has to be student-centred development that suggests the best path in learning for different students. It goes into mysticism and because of that, it does not appeal to me , that much. I am a teacher with Materilistic dialectic criticism background.

So we can suggest , that we can use also Gardners theory of multiply intelligence.

Action plan

Get evaluation –what type of learners are McQueen.

Develop more strategies to involve students in team building activities.

Strengthen ground rules-paper pen and book , not what tutor has to provide

Give Students chance of independent work and provide resources for more creativity

Check ( develop check material, tips) understanding and memorising material.

Ask Observer to type observation.

Check that Observation are marked( notes at least made) in the Observation list in time of the lesson
